If you attend only one ukulele-related event in Corktown this week, make it this one. Steve and David of the Corktown Ukulele Jam have arranged for the uke action to move to the front room of the Dominion on Queen, and the whole night will be captured on video and uploaded to YouTube.
The Best of The Corktown Ukulele Jam, 8pm
Wednesday, April 1, 2009
Dominion on Queen, main room
500 Queen Street East (at Sumach, 2 west of the DVP), Toronto, ON
I’ll be there, reprising (at Steve’s request) my ukulele cover of “She’s Dead” by Jim’s Big Ego. Video to follow, if it’s any good.
My pal Tom gave me a ukulele for Christmas. To me, it’s wonderful. To Jenna, it’s irritating.
So then, I can’t tell you how happy I was to discover the Corktown Ukulele Jam. It started about a month ago, and is held every Wednesday at the Dominion pub on Queen (a five-minute walk from our apartment). Last night, I went for the first time with Jenna and Rae.
Steve and David, the organizers, were welcoming and knowledgeable. Someone played a Jonathan Coulton cover (Re: Your Brains). It was kind of, sort of, like going to ukulele heaven.
I’ll be back next week, and I hope this thing keeps going. It’s terrific. Sometimes I am very glad to live in a city large enough to support something like this.
The Popeyes Chicken at Queen and Sherbourne is now open for business:
To “celebrate,” I now present this 0:30 MP3 version of a fake ad produced by Tristan and I for our first live-to-air radio show in first year audio at Ryerson:

I’m really happy to report that SSID Corktown_Free extends a little farther east on Queen Street, thanks to Val, a neighbour I met this past weekend, and Savoury Grounds, the new coffee shop.
If there was ever evidence that what’s happening farther east of us on Queen Street is spreading into Corktown, it’s the new coffee shop that opened up at 354 Queen East (next to Ray’s Convenience). I went by tonight after Jenna texted me to announce its existence, and peered in the windows. I spotted comfy chairs and an espresso machine, so it at least looks better than Coffee Time.
Looking forward to trying it out tomorrow morning, and pitching the owner on mesh networking.
Saw this in the CRBA Google group, and thought it was worth reposting (links added are mine). Jenna and I plan to attend.
Toronto Centre All Candidates Meeting
Sunday, October 5, 2008
5:00 – 7:00 pm
at
C’est What
67 Front Street east of Church Street
You are invited to an informal gathering to meet your riding candidates for the upcoming election. Listen to candidates opening statements and ask questions about the issues important to you and your community.
Earlier this year, the Coffee Time at Queen and Sherbourne closed its doors because the owner was arrested (for allegedly selling drugs out of the store).
It has sat, windows papered over, for months, until recently, they tore down the Coffee Time sign and repainted:
A few days ago, they installed a Popeye’s Chicken and Seafood sign on the building:
For some reason, our corner is going crazy for pizza.
Today, I stopped into the soon-to-open Magic Oven at 360 Queen St. East, and talked to the owner, Tony about my little WiFi project. He said they plan to open for tomorrow night, Friday the 20th.
A bit farther west, there seems to be a Domino’s going in:
Makes me wonder what effect all this will do to my favourite pizza spot on the corner, Pete’s:
